Narenhua

Visual Artist | Painter

Narenhua is a Mongolian-born visual artist and painter whose practice explores the relationship between observation, place, and human experience. Working primarily in oil, watercolour, charcoal, and drawing, she is interested in how landscapes and ordinary things become meaningful through sustained looking, lived experience, and memory.

Her Mongolian cultural background has shaped a longstanding sensitivity to landscape, movement, and the relationship between people and their environment. This sensibility has continued to develop through her life across Inner Mongolia, Hangzhou, and Toronto, where changing environments have expanded her understanding of place and belonging.

For Narenhua, painting is not simply a technique for representing the world; it is a way of engaging with it. She approaches observation as an active and interactive process. Through plein-air painting and studio practice, she studies changes in light, temperature, atmosphere, colour, and form, allowing direct observation to develop into interpretation.

Her practice moves between landscape, trees, flowers, still life, and human and animal subjects. Alongside observational painting, she explores how forms encountered in the real world can be simplified, reorganized, and transformed through painting. Calligraphic gestures and expressive brushwork are particularly important to her oil painting practice, creating a dialogue between observation, structure, and painterly movement.

Narenhua holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts from the China Academy of Art and an M.A. in Oil Painting from the Central Academy of Fine Arts. She has more than 25 years of experience in higher art education and has held academic and teaching positions at the China Academy of Art, Inner Mongolia Arts University, and Zhejiang Shuren University. She has also served as a visiting professor and doctoral supervisor at Krirk University in Bangkok.

Her research and publications address painting, art education, visual inquiry, phenomenology, and arts-based research. Her academic and artistic research has been presented internationally through exhibitions, lectures, and art-education forums, including TEDxXihu, the InSEA World Congress in Vancouver, and IACAET-related international forums. Her work has been exhibited in China and is held in public and private collections.

Since relocating to Canada in 2022, Narenhua's practice has expanded through sustained engagement with the Canadian landscape and everyday experience. Bond Lake and the surrounding landscape have become recurring sites of observation, while her recent still-life paintings turn toward familiar objects and the memories and associations they may evoke.

Across these bodies of work, Narenhua continues to explore a central question: How does looking transform our relationship with the world?

For her, painting is a way of negotiating between observation and interpretation, the familiar and the unfamiliar, and the individual experience and the shared world.
